Lavender: linalool and linalyl acetate
Lavandula angustifolia owes most of its character to linalool and linalyl acetate. It is the archetypal evening scent in European tradition: pillow sprays, drawer sachets, bath oils. Its role in a routine is almost always about signalling the end of the day rather than the beginning.
Eucalyptus: 1,8-cineole
Eucalyptus globulus and its relatives are dominated by 1,8-cineole, also called eucalyptol, which gives that clean, cutting, almost airy quality. It reads as clarifying rather than sedating, which is why it usually appears in smaller proportion in an evening blend and larger proportion in a daytime one.
Why blends are balanced, not maximal
More oil is not better. A well-built blend keeps total essential oil content low so the skin tolerates it and the aroma stays legible rather than overwhelming. Peppermint provides the cooling sensation, eucalyptus opens the top note, and lavender rounds the finish so the whole thing settles instead of shouting.
Safety notes
Both should be diluted before skin contact. Eucalyptus and menthol-containing oils are not suitable for babies or young children and should not be used near the face on children at all. Keep away from eyes. Patch test first. If you have asthma or a respiratory condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take prescribed medication, speak to a clinician before adding strongly aromatic products to your routine.
