Peppermint Oil: What the Cooling Sensation Actually Is

Peppermint is one of the most recognisable aromatic plants in the world, and the reason it feels cold on the skin is chemistry rather than temperature. Here is what is happening, and how it is used traditionally.

Menthol and the cold receptor

Peppermint oil (Mentha x piperita) is rich in menthol. Menthol activates TRPM8, the same receptor in your sensory nerves that responds to genuine cold. The receptor fires, the brain reads 'cool', and the skin feels chilled even though its temperature has barely changed. That is why the sensation is immediate and why it fades as the volatile oil evaporates.

Traditional topical use

Diluted peppermint oil has a long history of being smoothed onto the temples, the hairline and the back of the neck. These areas are chosen partly because the skin is thin and the sensation registers quickly, and partly because the aroma sits close to the nose, which makes it a strong sensory cue.

Dilution and safety

Undiluted essential oil should never go on skin. Sensible practice for adults is a low single-digit percentage dilution in a carrier such as fractionated coconut, jojoba or sweet almond oil.

  • 01Patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours
  • 02Keep well away from the eyes, eyelids and mucous membranes
  • 03Wash hands after applying
  • 04Avoid on infants and young children; menthol is not appropriate for them
  • 05If pregnant, breastfeeding, asthmatic, or using prescribed medication, check with a clinician first

Aroma is part of the effect

Scent is processed in the limbic system, closely tied to memory and emotional state. Using the same aroma at the same point in the day builds an association over time, which is why aromatic ingredients are so often the anchor of a wind-down routine rather than an afterthought.
